Orascom talks with Hutchison Telecom for further stake fail

Egypt-based Orascom Telecom Holding's attempt to increase its presence in the booming Indian cellular market has failed, with its negotiations for merger with Hutchison Telecom International Ltd ending without success.

Orascom had earlier picked up 23 per cent stake in Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecom, which gave it about 10 per cent equity share in Indian cellular venture, Essar Hutchison.

BT says applies for long-distance licences in India

Alcatel, C-DOT JV opens WiMAX reality center

Alcatel and C-DOT, the Indian Government's telecom technology development center, announced that a new state-of-the-art "WiMAX reality center" has been officially inaugurated in Chennai, India. This is the first lab of its scale entirely dedicated to WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 technology in India.

Telefonica, Li Ka-shing to join HK financier in buying 22.65 pct of PCCW

HONG KONG (XFN-ASIA) - Hong Kong financier Francis Leung said Spain's Telefonica SA and two Li Ka-shing foundations are among the entities that will join him in buying 22.65 pct of PCCW Ltd from Li Ka-shing's son, Richard Li.

The younger Li holds the PCCW stake through Singapore-listed Pacific Century Regional Development (PCRD).

In a statement released over the weekend, Leung said Telefonica will buy an 8 pct stake in PCCW while the Li Ka-shing Foundation Ltd and Li Ka-shing (Canada) Foundation will take a combined 12 pct stake in the Hong Kong fixed-line carrier.

US House hearing set for Lucent-Alcatel deal

Top officials at Alcatel and Lucent, the French and US telecommunications equipment manufacturers, will be called before lawmakers on Capitol Hill next week to answer questions about the merger deal's national security implications.

Alcatel's Healthy Deal

Alcatel announced a very large multiyear contract worth $300 million this week -- but not with a telecom operator.

Instead, the deal is with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, with which Alcatel will form a joint venture to develop technologies and applications for the healthcare industry, as well as providing "enterprise data and telephony solutions, IP routing equipment, optical transport technology and contact center solutions."

Verizon hangs up cell tower proposal

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area officials announced there will be no cell phone towers in the park — for now.Park Superintendent John J. Donahue said Thursday that Verizon Wireless has withdrawn its application to build two towers in the park.The towers would have been the first built in the park's history.

Forecast sales growth raises shares in Cisco

Cisco Systems' shares surged Thursday after the company predicted faster sales growth than analysts anticipated, spurred by customer demand for gear that offers high-speed Internet and video downloads.
Sales will rise as much as 25 percent to $8.29 billion this quarter, the company's chief executive, John Chambers, said Wednesday after Cisco reported first-quarter revenue that also beat estimates. Analysts predicted $8.05 billion on average.

China business VoIP exchange spending to triple

Businesses in China will triple their spending over the next four years on hardware that saves money by routing phone calls over the internet, a new report forecasts.

China's annual corporate spending on IP private branch exchange (IP PBX) hardware will rise from $164.1m this year to $479.5m in 2010, according to analysts at research firm In-Stat.
