Fujitsu Sues Tellabs for Patent Infringement

Tokyo, January 30, 2008 Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. ("Fujitsu") announced today that they filed a patent infringement lawsuit on January 29, 2008 (U.S. time) against Tellabs, Inc. and Tellabs Operations, Inc. ("Tellabs") in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Fujitsu seeks monetary damages and an injunction against Tellabs' future infringement of Fujitsu's patents.

In its complaint, Fujitsu asserts that Tellabs' products infringe four of Fujitsu's U.S. patents covering optical communication technologies. The accused products include the Tellabs 7100 Optical Transport System, Tellabs 5500 series and Tellabs 6300 series. The complaint follows numerous attempts by Fujitsu to engage in cooperative discussions with Tellabs in order to resolve Tellabs' infringement activities. Since a cooperative resolution could not be reached, Fujitsu determined that litigation was necessary in order to protect Fujitsu's rights and the value of its intellectual property.

"Fujitsu has been investing heavily for years in research and development and owns approximately 10,000 patents in the field of optical communications around the world," said Masanobu Katoh, corporate vice president and president of the Law & Intellectual Property Unit of Fujitsu Limited. "In this field, Fujitsu is a leader and has patents that are important to optical communication technologies such as Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET), Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM). We consider our intellectual property to be valuable company assets and are committed to protecting and enforcing them."

Verizon's FiOS TV Reaches 1 Million Subscribers

NEW YORK - In less than 28 months, more than 1 million customers have chosen Verizon FiOS TV, making the company the 10th largest cable provider in the United States.    The company announced Monday (Jan. 28) that it surpassed 1 million FiOS TV customers in January after a banner 2007.  FiOS TV launched in September 2005.

"Some experts doubted that we could come this far this fast," said Virginia Ruesterholz, president of Verizon Telecom.  "We launched FiOS TV just 28 months ago in one Texas market.  While we're delighted to pass the 1 million milestone, we know that the real winners are our customers, who now have a genuine choice for their cable television service," Ruesterholz said.

Verizon delivers FiOS TV, FiOS Internet and voice service on the nation's most advanced fiber-optic network all the way to customers' homes.

Verizon added 226,000 net FiOS TV customers in the fourth quarter and a total of 736,000 during the year to end 2007 with 943,000 FiOS TV customers.  Including satellite TV customers served in partnership with DIRECTV, Verizon has more than 1.8 million video customers.

At the end of the year, Verizon was marketing FiOS TV to nearly 5.9 million homes in 13 states, up nearly 1.2 million from the end of the third quarter.  That means Verizon's penetration rate for the service at the end of 2007 averaged 16 percent across all markets, particularly impressive since marketing has just begun in many communities.  Verizon continues to add new town and city TV franchises every week to continually expand the number of customers who can order FiOS TV.

Verizon announced its 1 millionth customer for FiOS Internet service in June 2007, and at year-end had more than 1.5 million FiOS Internet subscribers, representing 20.6 percent penetration across all markets of the nearly 7.5 million homes open for FiOS Internet sales.  Combining FiOS Internet and DSL, Verizon had 8.2 million total broadband connections at year-end, up 17.9 percent from year-end 2006.

For FiOS TV, 2007 was the biggest year yet.  Verizon became the 10th largest cable provider in the U.S. by surpassing the total number of customers served by Cable One, which reported just over 699,000 customers at the end of the third quarter.  The ninth-largest competitor is Mediacom Communications with more than 1.3 million customers.

Huawei All Set to Conquer North American Mobile Phone Market: Launches Its First Mobile Phone in North America

Huawei announced today the immediate availability of the Huawei M318 for MetroPCS Communications Inc. customers. This sleek and feature-rich clamshell handset marks the first available Huawei mobile phone for the North American market and the first in a family of devices that Huawei will make available to North American customers.

Although successful as telecommunication equipment vendor in its home-turf China and most part of the developing world and to some extent in Europe, Huawei is yet to make it presence felt in the North American market. Its previous attempts to sell data communication gear in the US was a disaster. Huawei was sued by Cisco for intellectual property violations. Huawei went for an out of the court settlement and silently withdrew from the US.

Well that's the past. But things are quite different this time around. Since Huawei is entering with Mobile phones, which is a commodity product, more than competitors trying to stop its entry, it will be the demanding North-American consumers who will decide the fate of Huawei.

Looking at its recent success in selling 3G phones to major operators in Europe, Huawei seems to have learnt the art of selling to the developed world. It will be interesting to watch whether Huawei will be able to repeat that in the US (and North America).

Will Huawei be lucky and successful and this time? Leave your comments to let us know your view..

ABI Research: Mobile Operators to Begin Migration to All-IP Mobile Networks For Multimedia Services by 2010

LONDON - January 9, 2008 -

Network operators are planning to roll out all-IP networks beginning in the next two years, according to a new Research Brief from ABI Research. The move to an Internet Protocol-based infrastructure is a natural evolution for the mobile network as broadband services — including Voice over IP, and other SIP services – begin to be deployed. The industry aims to rival mobile WiMAX, which has similar aims and timescale.

In early 2008 there will be full 3GPP standards for mobile networks allowing IP-based services to be deployed, a process that ABI Research analysts expect to start in 2010, following trials in 2009.

"As we move to the end of the decade, mobile networks will emerge with a flat all-IP architecture using 3GPP standards to deliver multimedia services and VoIP. Operators want to control operating costs by eliminating the current dual circuit and packet switched networks," says ABI Research analyst Ian Cox. "This will enable service delivery platforms and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) to be deployed in the network, streamlining operations and allowing new services to be introduced quickly."

For users, says Cox, all-IP provides better and more compelling services and delivers higher data rates, for video and rich voice sessions.

For operators, all-IP allows services and transport in the network to be separated and to evolve independently. This will speed up the development of content and services, to the advantage of the whole industry.

" Migrating Mobile Networks to IP" examines the opportunity for migrating mobile networks to all-IP. It includes a review of the current standards position and activities of the major vendors. It forms part of ABI Research's Wireless Infrastructure Research Service which also includes Research Reports, other Research Briefs, Market Data, Online Databases, ABI Vendor Matrices, ABI Insights, and analyst inquiry support.

ABI Research is a leading market research firm focused on the impact of emerging technologies on global consumer and business markets. ABI Research Says FTTH to Further Expand Its Reach in Asia-Pacific

SINGAPORE - January 3, 2008 - Broadband access in the Asia-Pacific region has experienced significant growth in the past decade, as operators have upgraded their networks in anticipation of future demand for high-bandwidth services. In a new study focused on residential FTTH in APAC, ABI Research finds that different markets within the region are currently in very different stages of broadband growth.

"While broadband adoption is increasing within APAC, growth is not homogeneous across all countries in the region," says research analyst Serene Fong. "For instance, Hong Kong is one of the early adopters of FTTH and has the largest FTTH household penetration, currently 21%. On the other hand, countries such as China and India are still struggling to encourage greater broadband usage." For now, most FTTH activity is still in the more developed countries within the region: Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.

Generally speaking, broadband penetration in the APAC region is still relatively low compared to the rest of the world. Fong believes that, "Demand is largely determined by CPE and infrastructure costs. Consumers are also looking out for sufficiently rich multimedia content to justify their subscriptions. But the irony is that carriers are also waiting to ride on economies of scale in order to offer more attractive and affordable packages."

Fiber installation is a major investment that requires a very strong business case and definite objectives to be justifiable. According to Fong, "Uses of the Internet are multiplying at a rapid pace, including many bandwidth-hungry services. There are compelling trends leading us to believe that IPTV and related content applications will drive demand for FTTH."
